Dexter

For the last 4 years I've been working on my content management system that I lovingly call "Parody". It's been maturing and has gone through at least one total rewrite. Now, it's time to do it again. And this time I decided that, in addition to the rewrite, it needs a new name. I thought about it for a very long time (read "two days") and finally a name was found.

Dexter is its name-o

As a child my favorite TV program was Dexter's Laboratory. His high tech gadgets kept me glued to the TV for hours. It was actually my girlfriend who came up with the name and instantly I knew I liked it. With the rewrite some new features will be added and existing code will be reused and improved as much as possible.

New features

Modules will be highly pluggable, meaning that in order to install a new module or uninstall an old one, all you will need to do is either remove or add the appropriate folder, similar to how you install programs on a Mac.

  • Pluggable modules
  • User access control
  • Automatic updates
  • Bug reporting built in
  • Better caching mechanism
  • More extensive documentation

Other news

In other news, the depth vision project I'm working on this summer is coming along nicely. We have completed faze one which is combining the output from a normal firewire/usb color video camera and the output from the Swiss Ranger depth camera into a single RGBZ stream. That stream is then broadcast using Psyclone and that's where the next faze begins.

Next up is the actual human detection and the hurdles associated with that. We are on schedule however and I have high hopes of finishing this near the end of the summer.
