Dexter update
6 September, 2007 - Post a comment - PermalinkI've been working hard (or hardly working, ha ha) and I'm proud to say that Dexter has come very far in the short time since I started working on it. Some features have been cut, others added and the overall architecture went through many iterations until I found one that worked. I've implemented some exiting features that I don't recall seeing in any other CMS out there (please someone correct me if I'm wrong).
Original feature plan:
Pluggable modulesDone!User access controlDone!Automatic updatesDone! (has any other CMS got this?)- Bug reporting built in - Not quite done but close (has any other CMS got this?)
- Better caching mechanism - Also not done but Dexter's performance is quite acceptable
- More extensive documentation - Comments are plentiful in the code but no manual yet
Added features:
- Everything is taggable (pages, blog entries, files, users etc.)
- Installing a new module? Just drop the folder right in, ala Mac OS X, Dexter will figure everything out
- Possibility to make a public API so people can interact with your site (if you want)
- TinyMCE is used instead of HTMLArea (much cleaner code, much more responsive and better looking)
- Profile picture for users :)
So you see that the features are coming along nicely and I don't recall seeing Updates available in any other CMS. I only remember seeing that you would have to download a *.zip or *.tar.gz and manually update the files on your host. In Dexter you only need to click a button and it will update the files itself.
I know that very few people actually read this blog but I'm going to ask anyway. If you would use a CMS to administer your site, what features would you most like to see?
